Japan Society Awards - from 1994 - 2009

  • Past recipients of the Japan Society Awards have been: (please report any broken links!)

    1994 Prof. Charles Boxer: For his scholarship and contribution to knowledge about Japan. In addition, Mr Sadao Oba: A long standing member of the Council and an enthusiastic supporter of the Japan Society.

    1995 Mrs Keiko Holmes: For her work of reconciliation with former prisoners of war.

    1996 Mrs Dorothy Storry: For her role at the Nissan Centre for Japanese Studies and with the Nichi-Ei Otomodachi Kai. In addition Mrs Elizabeth Thurley: For her work leading to the Schools Visit Programme and forming the Eikoku Bunka Centre.

    1997 Mrs Mary Grace Browning: For her work developing Japanese language GCSE and A level exams, and a programme of youth exchanges. In addition Mrs Masako Kidani: For her work with the Red Cross Momiji Project, an exchange for disabled young people.

    1998 Mr Trevor England: For his work in Japan with CATCH!, the Welsh Society for Brain Injured Children. In addition Mrs Haruko Lewis: For promoting Japanese language and friendship in Birmingham including founding Eiwakai.

    1999 Mr James Howat: For fostering relations between Scotland and Japan since 1964 and Lady Knill: For her contribution to the understanding of Japan as secretary of the Donnington Grove Japan Society.

    2000 Mr Setsuo Kato: For his ideas and encouragement for many Japan-related projects throughout the UK. In addition, Mr Robert Philifent: For creating the Library of Japanese Science and Technology near Newcastle. In 2000 a Special Award also went to Mr Nicolas Maclean for his work in founding the JET programme.

    2001 Mrs Kaoru Borsuk: For coordinating Sakura-kai, a group of volunteers who teach weekly Japanese language classes and in addition, the late Mrs Olive Checkland: For her contribution as author and lecturer to knowledge of the growth of UK-Japan relations.

    2002 Mr Michael Ayling: For his work with the Japan Society Southern Counties, which flourished under his leadership. In addition, Mrs Mizuyo Oyama: For her long contribution to UK-Japanese friendship and translations of Japan Society publications.

    2003 Mr Philip Malins: For his work over more than 50 years to bring Japanese and British together in the spirit of reconciliation. In addition, Mr Paul Norbury: For his work in publishing books and magazines about Japan since 1970, including the Society's own 'Biographical Portraits' series.

    2004 Mr Graham Healey: For his contribution to the development of Japanese studies in the UK to the JET programme. In addition, Mr Noboru Koyama: For his active role in the UK-Japan cultural scene, publication of many books and contribution to the Japan Society's Biographical Portraits.

    2005 Mr Yushin Toda: For promoting awareness of Japan in Glasgow, including a voluntary Saturday Japanese language class and the 'Japanese Matsuri for Glasgow'. In addition, Mr Louis Turner: For his work with the Asia Pacific Technology Network, forging science and technology links over a 20 year period.

  • 2006 Mr Keith Haines: For his contribution to forging links and facilitating academic, business and cultural visits. In addition, Mr Eiji Seki: For his contribution to Anglo-Japanese relationship through his research, writing and lectures.

    2007 Dr Eric Albone: For his work to encourage young scientists in the UK and Japan, through exchanges and workshops giving experience of 'real' science. In addition, Ms Miyako Yoshida: For her unselfish and voluntary activities as an unofficial ambassador for cultural relations.

    2008 Professor Lesley Millar: For developing links between textile makers for shared learning and cultural exchange and Mrs Momoko Wiliams: For promoting Japan UK links through many activities at the grassroots level.
