Japanese events in London: 24th August - 30th August 2009

Our Japanese course in London is in full-swing with our week five hosting a guest talk from the British Origami Society. We had a lot of fun in this session with Sharon Turvey showing us many popular origami shapes and introducing the history behind this extremely relaxing hobby. If you are interested in our next Japanese language course please get in contact!!

The Japan Society speaking group, での日本語会話イベントにお集まりください, are hosting their annual summer party at the Water Poet on Friday the 28th August. Members are invited for an evening of barbequed food and drinks from 6.30pm. Sign-up sheets were present at the regular gathering on the 4th August but if you missed these you can contact the group by email for availabilty.

We have visitors from all around the world that read our blog, but for our readers in Scotland, they have a special treat this week with the Henry Dyer Collection: Dai Nippon Exhibition happening from this Saturday, 22nd August 2009 until the 10th October. Previously undisplayed, this is a rare opportunity to view this outstanding collection of work from Eizan, Kuniyoshi, Kunisada, Sadahide, Kunichika and Hiroshige. The exhibition focuses upon the kabuki related material in the collection and explores theatrical traditions of Japan. Henry Dyer's enthusiasm for acquiring Ukiyo-e documents the cultural reciprocity in the Japan and the West at the close of the 19th Century - something that our students would appreciate if they are in Scotland!

Henry Dyer was the first Briton to be decorated by the Japanese Government. Having resided in Japan from 1873-1882, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, third class, upon his departure.
