Japanese Events in London: 22nd - 28th June 2009

  • This week in London we do see a couple of Japanese events that will be of interest to our readers and students. On the 23rd June 2009 (Tuesday) 2.30pm the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation are hosting another lecture discussing the 'Special Relationships' between the United States, Great Britain and Japan. We have covered these Japanese-UK lectures before and have received tremendous feedback from participants, so if that is anything to judge by, this will be a very interesting event.

The lecture will be held at the Daiwa Foundation at Japan House, 13/14 Cornwall Terrace, London NW1 4QP and the event is free. This seminar will explore the concept of 'special relationships' with respect to the United States, Great Britain and Japan. First used by Winston Churchill in 1945 to describe the shared interests and values of the United Kingdom and the United States, the special relationship between those two key allies, while sometimes questioned, continues to be based on close military, diplomatic, political and economic ties.

The US-Japan relationship from the post-war period onwards has been multi-layered and deep, with the US-Japan Alliance at its core; while Japan can claim its own special relationship with Britain, going back to the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902, (covered in our Japanese History guest talk), and a host of compatibilities as well as cultural and economic ties.

  • The second event that we would like to highlight is a dance event called 'Honno Sukoshi' by the Miyagi Dance Company. The show is put together by the widely acclaimed Japanese choreographer Osamu Jareo. Osamu Jareo explores different aspects of the human race when viewed from an alternative perspective. Featuring Toru Iwashita from Sankaijuku (a dance improvisation soloist), a piece of dance has been created which focuses on the everyday life of one of the company members. Projected images and live footage will be used to enhance the exploration. The event will be taking place at the Chickenshed, Chase Side, Enfield, London, N14 4PE on the 24-25th June 2009.
