Japanese Events in London: 13th - 19th July 2009
As exponents of Japanese language and culture we are very interested to hear who will win the "Knowing Me, Knowing You?" event this Monday hosted by the Japan Society. This event represents the conclusion of an art exhibition that was open to members of the Japan Soceity in celebration of Japan-UK 150, a series of events which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the UK, (this is covered in a previous blog post)
The lucky winner, decided by a panel of judges, including a 'popular vote', will receive a pair of round-trip tickets to Japan, courtesy of Virgin Atlantic. The event starts at 6.30pm at the Embassy of Japan, for more details please email

Before the winner is chosen, two members of the judging panel, Simon Fraser and Nana Shiomi, will discuss in an open conversation issues of cultural identity and expression in art. Simon Fraser is an artist and lecturer from Central St Martins College of Art and Design has a long-standing interest in Japan. At the College, he has many Japanese students, and follows with interest their development as they explore their Japanese identity in a UK context.
Please read page two for an anime and manga film and a trip to Brighton.
Another event that we would like to talk about happening this week is that the Japanese Conversation group, (part of the Japan Soceity) will be organising a trip to Brighton on Saturday, 18th July - something which our Japanese students are encouraged to attend to practice their Japanese!
Lastly, as part of its ongoing Japanimation season, Barbican Film will screen Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s Tetsujin 28 and the remastered version of Mamoru Oshii’s classic Ghost in the Shell 2.0. Both of these screenings will follow a special introduction by anime expert, Helen McCarthy. As our readers and students are aware, we run a guest talk on Japanese manga and anime. Also, you might be interested in an earlier post we wrote about anime and reading about Astro Boy, one of the original anime characters. Please let us know if you attended this event and we can update this page! Thanks for reading this and remember if you want to learn to speak Japanese you have come to the right place!
